Cultural Context

Lillian Pitt’s art is “contemporary” in that it uses modern techniques and materials. At the same time, her art reflects the life of her ancestors, who lived throughout regions surrounding what’s known in modern times as the Columbia River Gorge.

Native American Culture of the Columbia River Gorge

Lillian’s art is a reflection of the Native American culture of the Columbia River Gorge. According to archeological records, the history of that region dates back at least 10,000 years. We may never know the full extent of the cultural heritage of her ancestors. However, we do know that in more recent times (the last thousand years or so), the region was a mecca for trade.

Largely, that was due to the fact that salmon were so prolific, especially in the area of the river known as Celilo Falls. In fact, the Native American culture of the Columbia River Gorge revolves largely around salmon, and around Celilo Falls.

This section of Lillian’s website gives readers a view into the Native American culture of the Columbia River Gorge, which provides the context for her art.

Art that reflects the Native American culture of the Columbia River Gorge and Columbia Plateau Regions

Native American arts of the Columbia River and related Plateau regions are unique in many ways from the arts of Native peoples elsewhere in North America.

But not many people are aware of the differences. Nor are most people aware that there was tremendous diversity from one region to another. The differences include, among other things, the types of baskets, materials, and designs that were created.

It’s important to say that I value the contributions of all Native Amercian artists. And, my main goal is to be true to the unique aspects of my own culture and heritage — the Native American culture of the Columbia River Gorge. Still, I sometimes help to give voice to other Native American cultures, in accordance of course, with their own unique traditions and beliefs.
